Volume 4, Issue 4 - April 2009

Greetings, folks -

What's on my mind this week is an old-fashioned story of heroism. Old-fashioned because it's about courage and selflessness. It's about doing the right thing. That makes it a great antidote for the other news we hear these days, which seems to be all about fear and greed. I'm talking, of course, about Captain Richard Philips, who was rescued from Somali pirates on Sunday.

There's a lot of drama in the rescue, of course, but I think the real story is in what happened earlier. The fact that he traded himself as a hostage to save his crew, kept his cool during days of captivity, tried to escape by jumping overboard in the dark. It's an amazing story.

And it's only three months ago we had another story that featured a career professional showing he had the right stuff. Captain Chelsey Sullenberger landing his Airbus A320 in the Hudson River and making it look easy.

Somehow these two stories make me feel optimistic. Do you think optimism is contagious?
