Volume 5, Issue 4 - April 2010

Although public opinion polls suggest otherwise, most economists agree that the recession is over and another growth cycle has begun. The markets seem to think so too, and it will be interesting to see what the Q1 earnings reports say. Of course, for folks who were caught in a lay-off, the recession won't really be over until they find a new job.

I read a piece in the Wall Street Journal last week that surprised me a little. It said that a period of unemployment has surprisingly long-lasting effects. People who've been laid off often suffer from a kind of performance anxiety that undermines their effectiveness in a new position.

As new career opportunities emerge for the unemployed, finding a job can be a great relief but with it may come the stress of trying to overachieve. A positive personal narrative and an honest recognition of accomplishments can help. Lending an ear to new co-workers and going the extra yard to help job seekers doesn't hurt either. We're not out of the woods yet.

Advanced Analytics

Organizations today want to move beyond "rear-view mirror" reporting. Analytics, the application of mathematics to organizational operations, allows companies to act preemptively instead of reactively. This report outlines a seven-step process for success. Read the report.

Stop Diabetes, One Mile at a Time

Anne Marie Geib, InSys Account Executive, is joining the fight against diabetes by participating in this year's Tour de Cure, an annual event sponsored by the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Last year, more than 40,000 cyclists across 43 states raised nearly $17 million to support the mission of the ADA.

"This is a great event. My husband Greg and I are really excited and want to invite anyone who likes to ride to join us," noted Anne Marie. Greg, Team Pharma Captain, has established a team goal of $2,500. "If you can't join us, support our team with a donation or by volunteering," added Anne Marie. The event will be held on Sunday, June 13, 2010. Starting times vary depending on the length of the route.

The Northern New Jersey Tour starts at the Verizon headquarters, on the edge of the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge. The shorter rides (13 and 30 miles) offer a scenic loop through the swamplands, and the longer rides (50, 75 and 100 miles) travel through the Somerset hills, towards Hunterdon County and around Ravine Lake.
