Volume 5, Issue 7 - July 2010

If you're a regular reader, you know that I'm interested in mentoring programs in general. So this month, I wanted to tell you about the Boy Scouts of America's "Exploring" program. It's a career-awareness thing for high-school students to give them some first-hand information about the kind of work that's out there. By helping kids understand what's really involved in different jobs, it helps them make better choices and get the kind of education they need. You can read more about it on their website.

They support the program with an annual fund-raising event held to recognize people for business leadership, and this year, I'm one of the two honorees! I couldn't be more pleased, but now my job is to promote awareness and help bring in some contributions.

The event doesn't happen until November, and I may have other things to share between now and then. It looks like a very good cause to me, and I'm happy to be associated with it.

Enjoy the rest of the summer, and keep cool.

Outsourcing Flip-Flop

Here's a story about two perspectives on outsourcing: one believes that third-party cost cuts and guaranteed service levels are sufficient, while the other believes only an in-house model can deliver the customer focus and rapid adaptation required in today's market. Both come from the same organization. Read the article.

If you're looking for a weekend getaway, I'd like to recommend the Shearwater Inn in East Quogue, New York. It's a lovely B&B in the Hamptons with access to beaches, hiking trials and close to some pretty fantastic wineries. If you speak to Maureen, the owner & hostess-extraordinaire, mention my name.
