I'm not a sports fanatic, and I don't really follow soccer. But every four years I do pay attention to the World Cup. It's like the Olympics. When it's in the news almost every day, it demands some attention!

Applying sports metaphors to business is a very old game, and I think you can overdo it. Business isn't something  you carry on in front of a stadium full of fans, for one thing. When you do really well, there's no cheering. But the metaphor of teamwork certainly holds. There's no innovation so powerful that it can't be undermined by a team that doesn't work together. In an environment where people play politics and jockey for position, it's hard to accomplish anything.

That's the best thing about soccer. Success depends on the players' individual coordination, but also on their ability to read the game and communicate with their teammates. It's not about fancy equipment, it's about playing the game well. That's a lesson we should all take right to the office.
