Volume 3, Issue 10 - October 2008

Greetings, all...

Well, I spent last week at the IBM Conference facility in Palisades, New York, attending a five-day executive development program. It was co-sponsored by the Women's Business Enterprise Council and the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, and I was able to be there thanks to a nomination from UPS.

There were about 40 women in the group, from construction, healthcare, marketing, IT and other industries. As female entrepreneurs we saw ourselves as people who were ready to embrace change, foster collaboration and creative thinking, inspire our teams, manage our businesses, put dinner on the table and always ask how we can do better. We were of like minds, as they say!

Each day was devoted to a particular business area, like operations, finance and marketing, so there were different instructors and speakers engaged each day. This kind of focus really helped bring things back to basics for me. The most basic rule of all is to pay attention, and be clear about your goals.

And if there was one, most-important takeaway, it was to be sure you're always thinking strategically. You have to think past the sale in front of you, and keep the bigger picture in mind. Especially with the dim economic outlook for the short term, we all have to hang in and find new ways to compete in what's still a global economy.

Until next time,

A "Sweet Heart" of an Event for Jersey University Medical Center

For over seven years, Tami Crupi, InSys Account Executive and Business Developer, has been involved in organizing a fundraiser for the oncology unit of Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey. As a member of the planning committee, Tami works hard to pull together a black-tie gala that has grown to more than 275 attendees. The "Sweetheart Ball" is held each February and includes dinner, dancing, a silent auction and more. Friends, cancer survivors, patients and staff attend and last year, helped to raise nearly $200,000.

"I have a close friend who co-chairs the committee. Years ago she asked me to help out, and I've been involved ever since," noted Tami. As part of the planning process, the committee works with the oncology unit to determine the best use of the proceeds. Last year they were able to purchase much-needed imaging equipment that will help the center do more to meet patients' needs.

"This is a cause that's close to my heart. My dad was a victim of cancer, and I want to do everything I can to help." If you want to learn more, drop Tami a note.
