Volume 4, Issue 10 - October 2009

People are talking a lot about leadership these days, and there's a surprising divergence of opinion about what leadership actually means. Is it about vision? Communication? Inspiration? The late, great Peter Drucker said that management is doing things right, while leadership is doing the right things. That may be a little glib, but the two things are clearly related on some level. Not every good manager will be a leader, and not every leader will be a good manager. But there's some kind of overlap.

As an entrepreneur, I try to be both. I try to set the tone and the style for InSys, and establish a strategy that will keep us on the path toward growth. That's been harder over the last 12 months, but we're holding our own. And I like to read what other women managers are doing, so I wanted to share this interview with Carol Bartz, CEO of Yahoo.

She's got a lot of good common-sense ideas that appealed to me, and maybe they will to you. I'm certainly in agreement with her emphasis on quick, immediate feedback as an alternative to annual reviews. And I like the idea that you have to see your career as a pyramid, instead of a ladder. You need a broad base of experience, and to get it, you need to step outside your comfort zone.

Any thoughts to share about your vision of leadership? I'd love to hear them...

Linda Magnusson-Rosario, CEO

Nerds Rule

The idea of geek chic (think Elvis Costello) goes back to the late 1970s, but today the nerd culture has gone mainstream. It's in our gadgets, in our glasses and in our pop culture. Some say nerd is the new normal. Read the article.
